Week #36 - New Wine - The Challenge

Luke 5:33-39
June 22nd, 2019

Context

Luke 5-6:16 Yeshua chooses His Disciples

Luke 5:29-30 Yeshua has a meal with Levi/Matthew = a tax collector’s home including more “tax-collectors and sinners.” The Pharisees and Scribes object.

v.33 The disciples of John and the Pharisees question Yeshua’s disciples about fasting.

vs. 34-39 Yeshua challenges their thinking.

Luke 5:33-35 - But they said to Him, “John’s disciples often fast and offer prayers, as do the disciples of the Pharisees. But Your disciples are eating and drinking.” But Yeshua said to them, “You cannot make the guests of the bridegroom fast while the bridegroom is with them, can you? But the days will come; and when the bridegroom is taken away from them, then they will fast in those days.”

New Wine

Hebrew definitions:

  • H3196 Ya’yin wyy nii===== wine, press out

  • H8429 Tiy-rosh cryt srit = new wine, expulsion, expel. From the root word:

  • H3423 Ya-rash cry sri = dispossess, remove, taking possession, to occupy

  • H6171 Aw-sees sysy xixo = squeeze, trample, tread

The Challenge

Luke 5:36-39 Now he was also telling them a parable. “No one tears a patch from a new garment to use it on an old garment. Otherwise he will rip the new, and the patch from the new will not match the old. And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins, it will be spilled out, and the skins will be destroyed. But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins. No man who drinks old wine wants new, because he says, ‘The old is fine.’”

People cry out for new wine.

The wineskins need to be renewed, or new ones need to be made.

The “new wine” as it ferments, expands the wineskins.

2 Corinthians 4:16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Though our outward man is decaying, yet our inward man is renewed day by day.

Yeshua’s Disciples

It was common to learn Torah when young.

At age 12-13 most boys began working.

Some pursued learning Torah in-depth, i.e the Pharisees.

John’s disciples learned from him.

Yeshua’s disciples were ordinary men, didn’t fit the mold.

Acts 4:13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John and figured out they were laymen without training, they were amazed. They began to realize that these men had been with Yeshua.

They were a challenge to the old ways.

Honey Flow

The closer the flowers, the quicker the honey.

Planting flowers near the hive creates an inviting environment for the bees.

Yeshua has given us the authority to create/change the atmosphere for the “New Wine.”

The grapes are gathered, trampled on, causing the juice to flow.

Put in wineskins which are prepared for the expulsion caused by fermentation.

Ephesians 5:18-20 And do not get drunk on wine, for that is recklessness. Instead, be filled with the Ruach, speaking to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and making music in your heart to the Lord always giving thanks for everything to God the Father, in the name of the Lord Yeshua the Messiah.
